TTCL of Tanzania in Deal to Link Burundi to Terrestrial Internet

 In news

Tanzania Telecommunications Corp. entered a 10-year agreement with state-owned Burundi Backbone System to link the landlocked nation to submarine fibre-optic cables.

TTCL will provide internet protocol data and transit, backhauling and international private leased circuit services under the 13.8 billion-shilling ($6 million) deal, according to an emailed statement. It will be the only company providing broadband connectivity by linking Burundi to the Seacom and Eassy undersea cables, Chief Executive Officer Waziri Kindamba said.

Tanzania’s telecommunications industry regulator’s data shows state-run TTCL currently has close to 1 million subscribers and controls about 1% of a telecommunications industry dominated by the local units of Vodacom Group Ltd., Bharti Airtel Ltd. and Millicom International Cellular SA. Source: Bloomberg
